🤯 Mind-Blowing
At China’s Tianjin University researchers have developed a robot featuring a lab-grown artificial brain. The breakthrough involves combining a brain organoid with a neural interface chip, enabling sophisticated operations within the robot. Using brain-on-chip technology, scientists have successfully trained the robot to perform diverse tasks, as reported by local media outlets. Tianjin University has highlighted the robot's ability to manipulate objects and navigate obstacles seamlessly. This development marks a remarkable fusion of biological and technological advancements, showcasing potential applications in advanced robotics.
Scientists have created cutting-edge nanobots designed to annihilate cancer cells by triggering hidden weapons. These nanobots have proven their capability in experiments with mice. The nanorobots' internal weapons are activated by the acidic microenvironment that surrounds cancer cells, responding to the low pH levels present. In tests conducted on mice bearing human breast cancer xenografts, the nanodevices achieved a significant reduction in tumor growth, decreasing it by up to 70%. This discovery highlights a promising new direction in cancer treatment, with the potential to deliver highly targeted and effective therapies.
Engineers have recently developed a featherlight fluidic engine intended to power soft robots in various assistive devices. The engine's most remarkable feature is its ability to autonomously produce substantial force, eliminating the need for an external power source. Researchers at North Carolina State University have highlighted that the engine's operation is based on fluid dynamics principles. This innovative engine functions by directing oil into and out of a chamber within the soft robot, thereby enabling it to execute movements and tasks with impressive force.
Researchers at Stanford University have unveiled an innovative system designed to train robots using audio feedback, enhancing their ability to perform tasks effectively. The system, called ManiWAV, records live demonstrations by humans, providing real-time feedback in both audio and visual formats. The intuitive design of ManiWAV allows robots to learn manipulation skills solely from these demonstrations. The Stanford team reports that their system has successfully tackled four complex tasks, which required robots to detect contact events and recognize object attributes, even in difficult situations.
Efforts are being made to develop a next-generation AI supercomputer that could exceed the capabilities of Frontier, currently the world’s fastest, by a factor of 30. According to reports, AMD, a semiconductor company based in California, has been tasked by a client to assemble an AI training cluster comprising 1.2 million GPUs. This represents a substantial increase from current training clusters, which generally consist of a few thousand GPUs interconnected across local servers via high-speed links. For comparison, Frontier utilizes 37,888 Radeon GPUs.
🔊 Industry Insights & Updates
Earlier this year, Figure entered into its first commercial agreement with BMW to deploy its humanoid robot in the German automaker’s production facility located in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Recently, the California-based robotics firm released a video demonstrating its 01 humanoid robot performing its initial task within the vehicle assembly process. According to Figure, the humanoid robot operates fully autonomously, with all movements and manipulations showcased in the video driven by neural networks that translate pixel data directly into actions.
Digit, the humanoid robot, has been deployed at Spanx's warehouse to handle the movement of underwear boxes. GXO Logistics has teamed up with Agility Robotics to introduce Digit robots and utilize Agility Arc, a cloud platform, through a Robots-as-a-Service (RaaS) arrangement. Designed for logistics operations, Digit is a multifunctional robot engineered to perform diverse repetitive tasks safely alongside humans. This partnership signifies GXO's commitment to leveraging innovative robotics to streamline warehouse operations effectively.
Chinese robotics giant UBTech has announced a partnership with FAW-Volkswagen, one of the country’s pioneering joint venture automakers, to develop a cutting-edge car factory operated by humanoid robots. As reported by a Chinese news agency, this collaboration will involve the deployment of humanoid robots in the production processes at FAW-Volkswagen’s Qingdao plant in east China. UBTech has stated that the goal of this partnership is to significantly boost the intelligence and automation of their manufacturing facilities.
A towering 40-foot humanoid robot, is set to revolutionize work on train lines. This gigantic machine is operated by a human sitting in a specially designed cockpit mounted on a truck. The operator uses sophisticated controls to maneuver the robot's powerful limbs and hands, guided by high-definition cameras installed in the robot’s eyes. These cameras provide a clear and precise view, making the operation smooth and efficient. Capable of carrying loads up to 40kg, the robot can also work remotely at impressive heights of up to 12 meters above the ground.
🧬 BioTech
MIT researchers have conducted tests on an innovative prosthesis designed to give amputees a more natural walking experience. This brain-controlled bionic leg enables users to control the prosthetic foot solely with their thoughts. The study showcased participants' ability to walk with a more natural gait, navigate stairs, and effortlessly maneuver around obstacles. The pivotal component of this bionic leg technology is a new surgical method known as the agonist-antagonist myoneural interface (AMI). This technique allows for more intuitive and precise control of the prosthetic, significantly enhancing the mobility and quality of life for amputees.
Scientists have developed a bio-inspired hydrogel aimed at boosting nerve regrowth and creating a favorable environment for nerve regeneration and tissue repair. This innovative approach has shown significant promise in healing spinal cord injuries in animals, particularly in enhancing motor function during the recovery phase. The hydrogel, which is made from hyaluronic acid-graft-dopamine combined with a designer peptide, has been engineered to improve tissue integration following spinal cord injuries.
Scientists have developed a groundbreaking technique using a programmable RNA that leverages "jumping genes" to edit genomes without breaking DNA, avoiding the use of CRISPR. This innovative approach, detailed in three recent papers published in Nature, utilizes mobile genetic sequences' natural ability to insert themselves into genomes. By employing a RNA bridge between a genetic donor and a target, this method promises a safer and more adaptable means for making extensive chromosome changes. This advancement could revolutionize genetic editing by offering a versatile tool for precise genome modifications.
